Preparing Your RV for Summer

Preparing Your RV for Summer

It’s the time of year when we all start dreaming of summer. Even though spring weather in Minnesota is unpredictable, warmer days will be here before you know it. It’s important that you start preparing your RV for summer now, before it’s time to head out on the first camping trip of the year.

Do Some Checkups on Your RV

Preparing your RV for summer use starts with a few checkups. First, you’ll want to check that the batteries are still good. It’s a good idea to test the voltage and charge up the battery if it’s at 12 volts or less. While you’re there, check on the engine and filters.

Be sure to check tire pressure on all of your RV’s tires. This will help you spot any leaks or cracks, plus you can fill up any tires that lost a bit of air while in storage this winter. Your next move is to take a look at fluid levels in your RV. Change them out and top them off, and don’t forget the windshield washer fluid!

How’s your generator? Give that a quick checkup too to make sure it’s running properly and doesn’t need any maintenance.

Give Your RV a Flush

For RVs that have water hookups, you’ll need to give the water system a good flush. Preparing your RV for winter typically means adding antifreeze, which is something that needs to be flushed out of the pipes before summer.

Preparing Your RV’s Interior

Now, for the most important prep step: fill your RV’s beer fridge! Just kidding—although Joel might agree.

Just like the exterior of your RV needs some preparing before summer, the interior does as well. Your RV can get a little dusty sitting for so many long months in the winter. Wipe down the counters and cupboards, and even the walls if you want. Make sure the appliances are in good working condition.

Bring the vacuum outside and clean the floors with a mop after you vacuum them. Put fresh sheets on the beds and fill the pantry with some staples that aren’t perishable. (And yes, go ahead and fill that beer fridge if you’d like!)

Check in on the vents and windows to be sure they’re working well. Don’t forget to examine smoke detectors and other emergency equipment in your RV.

Preparing Your RV for Summer with the Right Insurance

Last but not least, call your insurance agent to make sure your RV coverage is all up to date. It might be a good time to review coverage options with your agent, as long as you’re calling anyway. Safety is critical to having a fun summer of camping in your RV, and insurance is part of that.
