Summer in Minnesota is all about spending warm, sunny days on the water. Here in Renville County, that usually means enjoying time on the river with friends and family. We talked with Sheriff Scott Hable about some personal watercraft safety tips to help keep everyone safe on the river this summer.
Wear Your Life Jacket
Sheriff Stable’s number one personal watercraft safety tip: wear a life jacket! He said Renville County has already had some water-related incidents reported this year. Be safe and make sure that everyone in your group has a life jacket on when you’re out enjoying the river this summer.
The River Constantly Changes
Part of what makes the river so fun is that the water is constantly flowing and changing direction. However, that can pose a personal safety hazard if you’re not careful. Always be mindful of the river—the current changes and new eddies form, so keep an eye on those.
Be Mindful of Personal Watercraft Capacity
If you’re taking a boat or other personal watercraft out onto the river this summer, pay attention to its capacity limit. If the boat is rated safe for four people, don’t overload it with five people. That can lead to safety issues on the water, which nobody wants.
Alcohol Impairs Judgment
People sometimes choose to bring alcohol with them to the river. If you do bring adult beverages with you, be mindful that alcohol can impair your judgment. Be responsible when it comes to alcohol and only use it in moderation, especially while you’re on or near the water.
