The weather is beautiful and we’re all ready to enjoy the spring-like temperatures. Before you jump onto your ATVs, take a moment to remember these safety tips.
The Golden Rules of ATV Safety
There’s an average 100,000 emergency room related injuries and over 700 deaths annually related to ATVs as stated by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. We know there are easy ways to implement safety with ATVs before heading out to ensure that you get home safely to your friends and family. The DNR website also has a page dedicated to keeping Minnesota all-terrain vehicle drivers safe.
The Top Safety Tips Include:
- Ride at safe speeds
- Always wear protective gear - think eyes, heads and no exposed skin
- Never drive under the influence
- Single-rider terrain vehicles are not meant to carry any more than one passenger
- ATVs come in different sizes for your safety
- Wear seatbelts if the terrain vehicle comes with them.
- Take recreational vehicle safety class in order to operate terrain vehicles on public land
Key Safety Tips for Youth
Safety skills are learned at a young age. Gear up your children to be safe every time they drive a terrain vehicle by teaching them now. Here’s some safety tips to keep in mind for youth.
- Children under 16 years of age need supervision and parental permission.
- Not all ATVs work for all ages. Manufacturers create smaller sizes to limited speeds to help educate young drivers before they are ready to drive a full sized terrain vehicle.
- Helmet and safety gear is required whenever driving ATVs. All drivers need protective helmets, eye protection, sturdy shoes and clothing to protect skin.
